Hal Almen, His Life and His Legacy
Harold W. (Hal) Almen, born on July 16, 1907, in Biwabik, Minnesota, was an extraordinary individual who left a lasting impact on his community. After completing High School, Hal graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Following his studies, he became a Major in the US Army Air Corp, serving his country with dedication and honor.
In 1950, Hal embarked on a new chapter in his life by opening the Bucket Shop in Oklahoma City. Over the years, he skillfully managed and successfully ran the business until its sale in 1981. His entrepreneurial spirit and determination were evident as he built a thriving enterprise.
Beyond his business endeavors, Hal was deeply committed to community service. He became the Charter President of the West Oklahoma City Rotary Club on June 26, 1958. Hal actively participated in the club's activities for many years, demonstrating his dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of others. His contributions were so exceptional that he received recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow, an honor bestowed upon those who exhibit outstanding service and commitment to Rotary ideals.
Hal’s faith and involvement in his community extended to his membership as one of the charter members of St. Stephens Presbyterian Church. This demonstrated his deep-rooted belief system and commitment to supporting and uplifting the local community.
On October 28, 2002, the world mourned the loss of a remarkable individual as Hal Almen passed away. His legacy lives on through his contributions as a successful businessman, his military service, and his active involvement in the West OKC Rotary Club and St. Stephens Presbyterian Church. Furthermore, his philanthropic spirit was evident through his decision to invest the proceeds from the sale of his business and bequeath a majority of his estate to several charities. One of these beneficiaries was the West Oklahoma City Rotary Club, which used the funds to establish a scholarship program.
Jim Moon, a Charter Member of the West OKC Rotary Club and a close friend of Hal, embarked on a mission to determine the best use of the funds, as stipulated by Hal himself, for educational purposes. In his quest, Jim discovered the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, and together, they formed the Hal Almen Scholarship. This scholarship program aims to support and empower individuals by providing financial assistance for their educational pursuits.
With 26 more recipients receiving $5000 scholarships in the Spring of 2023, it's clear that the scholarship program is making a significant impact. Since its inception in 2005, a total of 393 scholarships have been awarded, amounting to an impressive $1,723,000 in total funds. This kind of dedication and commitment to education is truly commendable. These scholarships will undoubtedly make a difference in the lives of the recipients and contribute to their educational journey.
The Hal Almen Scholarship program not only provides financial support but also fosters a community of education advocates and mentors. Recipients of the scholarship are encouraged to explore and maximize their potential, fostering a lifelong dedication to learning, growth, and contribution. Through this program, the West OKC Rotary Club aims to nurture individuals who will become future leaders and catalysts for change in their communities.
The legacy of Hal lives on through the Hal Almen Scholarship. The West OKC Rotary Club remains committed to honoring Hal's philanthropic vision by empowering individuals through education. Through the support of generous donors and dedicated members, the scholarship program continues to expand its impact, inspiring more individuals to pursue their educational aspirations and make a positive difference in the world.
